Halloween Costumewatch 2012: The Mad Hatter
When you hear the phrase Decision 2012, what do you think of? Forget politics, it's all about what to wear on Halloween night! October 31 is just 1 week away, so all this week I'll be featuring each person in our family and what they'll be wearing when we go trick-or-treating.
First up: Alfie. Despite last year's haul of Halloween costume options for Alfie, this year he has decided to go with his tried-and-true pirate coat -- with a twist. He's going as the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. Our annual school fundraising auction party had an Alice in Wonderland theme this year, so we had to come up with some kind of themed costume, and Alfie liked it so much he decided to wear it for Halloween as well.
To get the Mad Hatter look, Alfie wore his Jack Sparrow pirate coat all buttoned up, minus all the tattered rags, for a more tailored look. The Pea lent him a pink poufy flower and black ostrich feather to pin on his lapel, and he tied one of my silk scarves around his neck. Of course he wouldn't look like the Mad Hatter without a giant hat (he'd look more like Oscar Wilde, actually). So we got a giant hat with the iconic Mad Hatter sign: "In this Style 10/6" (apparently the sign is supposed to be a work order, and the "10/6" refers to 10 shillings and sixpence). I would have added an orange wig and garish make-up to make him look like Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter from the Tim Burton movie, but that's a lot of effort for two nights!
