None of my kids are born performers; they're never comfortable being the center of attention, and even The Pea, who participates in several dance recitals and shows each year, always confesses to feeling butterflies in the pit of her stomach whenever she gets up and thinks of all those pairs of eyes on her.
That's why I have such a difficult time believing them when they say it's their dream to appear on the tv game show, Family Game Night. Appearing in front of millions of people on television doesn't seem to faze my normally camera-shy kids. Maybe it's the thought of winning all those prizes. I remember fantasizing about winning the round-the-world showcase (A speedboat! A set of Samsonite luggage! A new car!) or even some lamer showcase (A charcoal barbecue grill! A trash compactor! And a golf cart!) on The Price Is Right, and the prizes on Family Game Night are so much better. Or maybe it's the thought of playing life-sized versions of their favorite board games (I must confess, I'd love to knock down the gigantic pins in Yahtzee bowling). Or maybe it's the thought of competing against other families.
Whatever the case, it doesn't look like we're going to be competing on tv anytime soon -- and it's not because I have no idea how to apply for the show, nor is it because I don't want to. No, the one stumbling block in my kids' plans for fame and fortune is the fact that the families on the show have just 2 kids, and none of my kids want to pretend they don't exist and give up the chance to compete. So until they figure out who goes on stage, I guess we'll just have to be content with the videogame version at home!
