The first Empty Nest

This week's Photo Hunter's theme is Empty.

My mother-in-law, who has not been to visit for 18 months, surveyed the kids' room upon arrival and noticed the twins' toddler beds. She exclaimed, "Last time we were here, they were in cots!" (she's English, she means cribs). Wow, that was so long ago for me that I hardly remember it. So I went digging into our photo archives. This is the last picture I took of Philip's crib, just before we dismantled and sold it. It looks so forlorn and empty. Looking at it gives me the beginnings of empty-nest syndrome. I hope the people who bought it have filled it with lots of blankets and toys and love.

  2. Awwww, that just breaks my heart. Great choice for The Hunt. It's definitely a good pick for empty.

  3. It looks empty and lonely. I was so sad taking down the youngest son's crib knowing that he was the last baby. But then it was very exciting that he was old enough for his own big bed. Thanks for stopping by and have a great weekend.

  11. Aww.. it makes my heartbreak thinking that one day our daughter's crib will be empty and dismantled. I love walking in the morning and seeing her standing there.
Nice picture. You captured it well

My daughter's crib has long been stashed away. But I know the feeling. Looking at pictures like this one gives us some nostalgia.

  16. Someone is probably loving it and using it right now. What a sweet photo, I would cuddle in that if I had it (of course, if there were a baby around, I would NOT be allowed).

    Thanks for visiting my bloggie.

  17. Thanks for visiting. I was lucky that when it came time for Nyssa to move to a "real" bed (in her terms), we were moving as well. So everything was topsy turvy and when the people came to get her baby furniture, it was a welcome sight... less clutter.

  19. I remember that feeling too, but I share your wish that the family that bought the crib from you is creating their own special memories.

Thanks for stopping by and visiting me.

  20. Aw -- that's sad. There are those poignant moments throughout life when it hits us that they will be constantly taking steps away from us over the years. It goes so fast.

    Thanks for stopping by.

  21. my mother was british and I love the word cot instead of crib...crib reminds me of cribbage or cage...none which bring good memories...cot on the other hand brings thoughts of relaxation and slumber.....interesting how we use words....

    Great choice for the hunt!

  24. I'm sure those cots are filled with love as we 'speak'. Kids grow up and fill other empty spaces in your home and heart. Happy weekend.

  25. I never expected an empty crib to be sad, but it is. It's so forlorn, as if waiting for a wonderful guest who is never going to come. Yes, I am sure the people who bought it have filled it with joy.

  27. Awww, that's just so sad. We have an empty bassinet that a well meaning friend gave to me long before we realized we would have trouble having a child.

    Happy hunting.

  31. I have precious memories of my son sleeping peacefully in his crib. He is 3 years old now and turning 4. I lent the crib to my husband's cousin.

Thanks for sharing something special to your heart.
